Alcohol and migraine: trigger factor, consumption, mechanisms A review Full Text

This study investigates the importance of alcohol as a migraine trigger factor, the prevalence of alcohol consumers and the mechanism of headache provocation. A MEDLINE search from 1988 to October 2007 was performed for “headache and alcohol”, “headache and wine”, “migraine and alcohol” and “migraine and wine”. In retrospective studies, about one-third of the migraine patients reported alcohol as a migraine trigger, at least occasionally, but only 10% of the migraine patients reported alcohol as a migraine trigger frequently.

If we suspect that eyestrain is a problem, we may recommend an ophthalmological exam. If you’ve received a migraine diagnosis, you might be wondering if gin is less likely to trigger a migraine than other alcohols. However, there may be more to the problem than meets the eye – learn how alcohol can both harm and help migraines, depending on how you use it. No potential conflicts of interest relevant to this article were reported. Histamine is known to liberate NO from endothelium, and it was suggested that the release of NO from cerebral blood vessels, perivascular nerve endings or from brain tissue is an important molecular trigger of spontaneous headache pain 67.

How can you prevent getting a migraine headache from alcohol?

  • Same‐day alcohol intake (Yes/No), and quantity of each type of alcoholic drink had 4.7% missing values.
  • Oftentimes individuals with migraine give up trying to identify which of the multiple potential triggers reported in population‐level analyses may apply to them.
  • The exact link between alcohol and migraine isn’t fully understood.
  • This article will explore the relationship between alcohol and headache and consider why some people develop an alcohol headache after one drink.

Curiously, in some countries, the percentages of alcohol or wine as migraine triggers were negligible, 6.1 25 and 1.4% 26, perhaps depending on the degree of alcohol habits. There were a total of 2990 embedded missing days (2990/46,820, 6.4%) resulting in 43,830 days (90 for each individual) eligible for analysis. Migraine days after the first day of attack (3665 migraine days) were removed from the models, leading to a dataset with 40,165 diary entries. The embedded missing days, as well as incomplete entries during tracked days, resulted in 7254 day‐cases with missing values (7254/40,165, 18.1%) in one or more of the independent variables, which were further removed from the analysis.

However, alcohol potently inhibited, in itself, diamine oxidase and may activate the release on histamine from mast cells. No differences exist between male and females 17, 22,27–29 in alcohol susceptibility. The HSS also allows us to assess the hangover symptoms following early drinking experiences.

In a study published in 2018, 77.8% of patients reported red wine as a trigger in general, with 8.8% of patients noting it as a consistent trigger. Around 30% of people who experience recurrent migraines report alcohol as a trigger, and 10% of patients cite it as a frequent or consistent trigger. Chemicals called congeners are also a component of alcoholic drinks.

People with migraine who treat their attacks with certain drugs should avoid drinking alcohol because it may interact poorly or dangerously with their medications. When mixed with alcohol, the common migraine medication Topamax (topiramate) can cause dizziness, problems with memory, sleepiness, and even depression. Even a small amount of alcohol can sometimes spur on a migraine attack.

Almost anything can be a migraine trigger, and migraine triggers are highly individualized. If you suffer from migraines, you may find that drinking alcohol can trigger an episode. Find out why alcoholic drinks can cause problems for migraine sufferers and what you can do to prevent alcohol-related migraines. It is clear that quantity can play a role in triggering headaches, and quality probably plays a role, but we do not know for sure how any type of wine or alcohol will affect people with migraine or who are prone to headaches. Like food triggers, the likelihood of a particular type of alcohol triggering a headache is probably different from person to person. If you suffer from migraines, talk with your doctor about how alcohol may affect you.

In a 2017 study, researchers found that people of East Asian ancestry drink less than members of other groups. Certain genes may influence the tendency to drink and alcohol tolerance to quantities of alcohol. While there is some research on each possible reason why alcohol causes headaches, study authors have not definitively proven the link between the two. Once it gets into your system, it is converted into a chemical that triggers migraine. We recommend exploring complementary treatments such as biofeedback, green light therapy and aerobic exercise. It’s important can alcohol cause migraines to work with your obstetrician and your headache doctor when you have migraine to establish a safe treatment plan.
